They had been systematically
moving through the Delta Quadrant for years, tearing apart every ship, every
planet, every conduit that the Borg used. They had never wanted the knowledge of
this dimension or its inhabitants, but the Borg had launched an invasion into
their space and challenged them to their place in it.
They had enjoyed great victories against their new enemies and were intent on
wiping them from existence, but then the USS Voyager had come through the Delta
Quadrant and disrupted everything. They gave their knowledge to the Borg and
made it possible for the cybernetic lifeforms to push them back into their own
space.
When the Borg learned of a way to assimilate them, they fought back using their
telepathic links to disrupt the Collective and allow for more victories. It was
decided that the Borg were too dangerous to be allowed to continue. Every
available bioship had been launched into the Delta Quadrant, channeling massive
power from their ships, they managed to destroy dozens of planets and thousands
of cube ships.
The Borg continued to adapt and fought hard against the invaders, designated as
Species 8472, but there were too many for the Borg to handle. Continually
modifying their techniques, their ships, and their weapons, the Borg were able
to force a stalemate, long enough to gather what was left of the Collective and
run.
8472 was satisfied that the Borg were no longer a threat to them, but they were
going to take their time and make sure the Delta Quadrant no longer held any
trace of its Borg inhabitants. Only when they were sure of their victory would
they return to their home in fluidic space.

Every Borg planet,
installation and ship had been destroyed. Vast sectors of the Delta Quadrant
were barren as 8472 did their work eliminating their greatest enemy. Only a
handful of ships remained to see the job done as they had been working for
decades to eradicate the Borg.
In the smoldering debris of what was once a yellow-green world, the last ships
from fluidic space opened a tear in space to return home. The Borg were gone
from the universe and their job was finally done.
