Best Friend: He grew up down the road from his best friend, Gretchen Himmelwalker. At age 19, he proposed to her and they were engaged to be married until her death.
Personal History: Born and raised in Frankfurt, Dietrich grew up having many interests and hobbies. He studied martial arts from the young age of seven and continues to be occasionally active when time allows. From a young age, his father taught him to fish and his uncle taught him bowhunting and he has always been a fan of the outdoors. When he gets to use a holodeck, he is either piloting spacecraft or outdoors doing some sort of activity.
Sometimes when at space for a long period of time, it’s the closest to the outdoors he gets.

When he was seven years old, he met Gretchen Himmelwalker who lived in a small village not far from his own. They became the best of friends and spent most of their time together.

While going through school his grades were not always at the top of his class but usually better than average. He took part in his high school’s concert, jazz, and marching band and was band President his senior year. There he discovered his desire to lead that would later be part of his motivation for applying to Starfleet. He plays the saxophone, piano, and feadog (Irish Tin Whistle). While in high school, he and Gretchen grew even closer and after graduating high school, he proposed marriage to her and she accepted.

Shortly before their wedding, Gretchen, who was studying Science at Yale on Earth, took one of the school’s research shuttles to travel to the upper layers of Sol. While Dietrich was piloting the shuttle for her, a solar flare sent the ship off course and damaged its primary thrusters causing the ship to start to be pulled into the star. A Starfleet ship in orbit of Mercury rushed to their rescue. There was an explosion in the shuttle before they could make it to safety through an airlock. Dietrich made it through the airlock and reached back for Gretchen who was caught in the flames as the airlock closed on his arm causing him to lose his right arm from just above the elbow down.

Devastated by the loss of his fiancée, Dietrich left the Sol System and built a home in the mountains of Vega. Sensor logs indicated that the solar flare could have been detected and it was piloting error, which only added to his sorrow. He stayed on Vega alone living off of the land before he decided to return to Earth and apply for Starfleet at age 21. It was a Starfleet ship that saved his life when visiting Sol and he always had a fascination for the military to begin with so he knew entering Starfleet was
his destiny. He was also determined to counter his fear of piloting since Gretchen’s death.

Short-Term Goals: Gain experience as a pilot in combat. Although mainly over his fears of piloting a shuttlecraft (that resulting in the death of his fiancée) he still wishes to increase his confidence in his piloting skills. Only in his mind are his skills not excellent.
Long-Term Goals: Although commanding his own ship one day is a goal, he has the desire to be a team leader in the years to come.
Personality: Introvert. He feels he is a natural leader and despite his quiet nature, he can take charge of a group when it is needed.

Weaknesses: Dietrich sometimes has doubts in his piloting skills since the death of his fiancée. He studied piloting at the Academy to face his fear and is for the most part able to get past it. He also doesn’t have a lot of stamina when it comes to physical endurance and it’s something he works to improve constantly by running and other endurance exercises.
