The '''4th Battle Group''' is one of the numbered fleets in the [[United Federation of Planets|Federation]] [[Star Fleet]]. Commanded from Earth by Vice Admiral William Oliver and Rear Admiral [[Thomas Grayson]] in the field, [[USS Nova, BB-106|USS Nova]] serves as [[Flagship]], while [[Star Fleet Headquarters]], in [[Sector 001]] on of [[Earth]], acts as group Headquarters. The group’s primary operating range encompasses much of the [[Alpha Quadrant]] and [[Beta Quadrant]] and is deployed to any area on an as-needed basis. Group operations can be based on virtually any mission profile which Star Fleet requires, and because of the group’s constant mobility and proximity to one another it makes an ideal Emergency Response Team. 

Rear Admiral [[Thomas Grayson]] acts as 4th Battle Group Field Commander directing the day-to-day Group activity in the field and ensuring that the group is always ready to serve the fleet and the Federation. The Group is overseen administratively at [[Starbase Headquarters]] by Vice Admiral William Oliver who serves as the Battle Group Chief of Operations and answers directly to the CinC.

One of the advantages of the group system is the increased variation in possible fleet structures. The group system allows for each operational group to function with the number and variety of ships best suited for its stated goals. A number of key factors make the 4BG unique, most notably the fact that the primary force is very small, consisting of only a handful of ships which almost always travel together.

Constructed at the Imperial ch'Havran ([[Remus|Reman]]) Shipyards, the RIS Shadowhawk launched into service for the [[Romulan Star Empire]] on Stardate 20804.21. Larger, faster and more heavily armed than other Romulan vessels, it is the first in a series of battle cruisers based on the RIS Firehawk prototype and boasts the latest in Imperial technology.

The Shadowhawk saw its initial action in the Third Federation/Romulan War, participating in the opening Battle of Sector 228. During the Third Romulan Civil War it came under control of the Underground Anna'eri Nuar faction and fought against the ruling s'Tei faction.

Space Station Sierra 18, previously known as Intelligence Installation 18, originally began as a small observation platform concealed on the surface of two engineering-joined asteroids near the Klingon Border. It was built during a time of heightened tension between the Klingon Empire and the Federation some 90 years ago. During that time span, as tensions began to grow so did Intelligence Installation 18 until it grew to the size and usefulness to attain outpost status and was renamed to Outpost 18.

The USS Dauntless is named for the quality by which one is incapable of being intimidated or discouraged. Like the word for which she is named, the crew of the USS Dauntless is truly fearless.

The USS Dauntless is the first Federation starship to bear the name. The SBD Dauntless' were small attack planes used in WWII. USCGC Dauntless (WMEC 624) Reliance class, was the first Coast Guard Cutter to hold the name.

The USS ''Ticonderoga'', CA-1471 is the third Federation starship to bear the name and the flagship of the [[2nd Battle Group]]. It is named for the Capture of Fort Ticonderoga in 1775. On May 10, 1775, Vermonter Ethan Allen and Colonel Benedict Arnold surprised and captured the small British garrison at Fort Ticonderoga. Cannons captured at the fort were hauled away and used to win the stalemate the siege of Boston, helping the American colonies earn a early victory in the American Revoluntionary War.

Serving as the [[1st Battle Group]] [[Flagship]], USS Pulsar is named after the [[Pulsar (Star)|pulsar star type]]. A pulsar is a rapidly rotating neutron star which emits electrons at nearly the speed of light from its magnetic poles, producing an effect reminiscent of the lighthouses once used to guide maritime vessels around coastlines, shoals and reefs, or towards safe harbor. The USS Pulsar is a symbol to all who see her of [[Star Fleet|Star Fleet's]] watchful eye over the [[United Federation of Planets|Federation]].
